Driving on a Non-UK Driving Licence

If you wish to drive in the United Kingdom on a driving licence obtained abroad, do not forget to check if you are entitled to do so, and if you are, how long such entitlement lasts.

There are separate rules governing licences issued in a European Community / European Economic Area and those from other countries.

If you need help to ensure that you are entitled to drive within the UK, we are here to help.

Driving on a European Licence

Visitors from within the European Community and European Economic Area who hold a valid licence can drive in Great Britain in accordance with the entitlement shown on the licence.

UK residents who hold a valid Community licence can drive in Great Britain for a specified period. You need to check the relevant time limits. As an alternative you may exchange your European licence for a British licence. Again time limits may apply.

It is important to note that if you live in Great Britain and hold a European Community licence with a vocational entitlement you must register with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Notifying conditions also apply in relation to various health conditions.

If you have questions regarding any of the above, or any other issues such as:

• Taking a British driving test

• Exactly what vehicle(s) you are entitled to drive on your licence

• Exchanging your current licence for a British licence

• What is the position regarding British penalty points on a European licence

or any other advice, contact Trafficlawyers today.

Driving on a Non-European Licence

Visitors holding valid driving licences issued by a country outside the European Community / Economic area may drive small vehicles (weighing up to 3.5 tonnes and with no more than eight passenger seats) for up to 12 months from arriving to Great Britain.

UK residents who hold a valid, ordinary driving licence for cars, motorcycles and mopeds can drive these classes of vehicles for up to 12 months after becoming resident in Great Britain. The best way to ensure that you continue driving legally beyond this period is to ensure that you obtain a British provisional licence and pass the British driving test before the end of the 12 month period.

Anyone driving in the United Kingdom without the correct Driving Licence is likely to be driving uninsured which is a separate offence.
